Minolta XG-2

Minolta XG 2 (1977)

The XG-2, 35mm SLR camera with automatic and full manual exposure control was introduced at the same time with the more professional model XD-11. Exposure meter is activated by a contact or pressure on "tough switch" shutter release. Metering is Full-aperture TTL center weighted type, by two CdS cells mounted on either side of the eye piece at the rear of the pentaprism.

Both cameras have a similar, compact body styling. Body dimensions are 138x 89x 52mm (WxHxD) and they are much lighter than the mechanical SRT cameras which were still produced in 1977. The weight is 505g without a lens. Power source consists two 1,5v silver-oxide, SR-44 or equiv.

The first XG camera was the XG7, released in October 1977. Minolta like also some other camera manufacturer had a practice of naming cameras differently in different markets, the body was called the XG E in Japan and the XG 2 in Europe. XG cameras had only a aperture priority mode compared to the optional shutter priority mode in Xd cameras.XG-2 operates on aperture-preferred and manual mode. An inconvenient feature is that the exposure meter turns off in manual mode and the camera lacks any non-battery-dependent shutter speeds.
The lens in a picture is a Tamron 3,5-4,5/ 28-50mm Zoom Lens. It belongs to the Tamron's Adaptall Series.
A new feature in XG-2 is a shutter release button which uses the electrostatic ability of human skin to turn the exposure meter on. No pressure is needed. The same technics is used on many of Minolta´s later models, for instance on the X-700.

"Your light, compact XG-2 is a top-quality single-lens reflex camera whose electronic system will control exposure for you automatically, freeing you for more enjoyment and greater creativity. You can also override the meter's automatic setting or set the camera for full manual operation. Electromagnetic shutter release and unique 'Touch switch" metering, head a host of other features. Attaching the accessory Auto Winder G enables single-frame/continuous motor film advance up to 2 frames/sec. Minolta's special Auto Electroflash 200X electronically switches the XG-2's shutter over for strobe exposures when charged and signals flash-ready in the finder; it also enables continuous-sequence flash with the winder. Besides new MD Rokkor lenses, your XG-2 uses virtually all interchangeable Rokkors made to date and all applicable Minolta SLR system accessories."

I am eternally grateful to my colleague Mr. K. Hakanen for contributing this camera to my collection.;-)

Minolta XG-M

Minolta XG-M (1981)

The most significant changes in XG-M was slightly changed body design and a right hand grip. The body is outwardly like X-700 although not identical. The new company logo with the rising sun was also used for a first time. Perhaps the most important change was the capability to use the new and faster Motor Drive 1. Character "M" in a model name denotes this new feature.
Once again in Japan the name of XG-M was different, there it was called the X-70.

A significant improvement in XG-M is also a new non shrinking leatherette covering. These and some other changes makes the XG-M a top model in the Minolta XG serie.

"Minolta precision lenses and accessories are manufactured under high quality control standards and are designed to the performance requirements of Minolta camera bodies. We recommend Minolta Rokkor lenses and Minolta system accessories for all types of photography."

Minolta Dynax

Minolta Dynax 60

It is said, that one of the best ways to experience the joy of photography is to start with a 35mm SLR camera. Konica Minolta’s DYNAX 60 awarded the “European SLR Camera of the Year 2004-2005”. These were my starters, Minolta X-700, which I bought after Asahi Pentax Spotmatic was The European Camera of the Year 1982-83, so the line continues.

The camera has to have something to "earn" this kind of statement. What is then those features and capabilities in Minolta Dynax 60 (Minolta Maxxum 70 in USA). The EISA - European Imaging and Sound Association stated, that Minolta Dynax 60 is the ideal synthesis of attractive price and generous equipment. If you wish, it can automatically do everything, except choosing the subject and the framing but if you prefer manual control, you just go for it. Apart from its high-quality, compact body, the Dynax 60 is impressive primarily for its speed and precision in use. In this manner it is better, than my couple of years older Pentax MZ-5n.
The nine-point AF with a central cross sensor and multi-dimensional predictive focus control enables very good focusing even on moving subjects. I have still noticed that it sometimes has a tendency to a moderate hunting, specially with the rather slow. 75-300mm lens. The Dynax 60 permits manual override of the focusing system by DMF (Direct Manual Focus) on Minolta D-Series lenses. The brightness of the viewfinder is not in a class with the professional line of Minolta SLR cameras. The body is a sturdy in design sophistication, and it's packed with features and user-friendly controls that put a range of functions at your fingertips. The special feature is, that the back cover is hinged on the left side of the body to allow greater access to the film chamber when inserting the film cartridge. Once the film is loaded, an automatic film chamber lock prevents the camera from being opened until the film is rewound. As a conclusion I would state; High-Speed AF SLR with Powerful Creative Controls.

"Konica Minolta Photo Imaging, Inc. ceased the camera business on March 31, 2006. As of April 1st, 2006, Sony Corporation is providing customer service for Konica's, Minolta's, and Konica Minolta's cameras and camera-related products except for the binoculars." The potential know-how of three Japanese companies is now integrated under the lead of the giant of electronics, entertainment and financial services, Sony Corporation.
